A short history of the association

CORVUS was founded in February 1996 spontaniously continuing the activities of the previous organization called Trifid (founded in late 70s). The main objectives for its birth were to group all of those interested in astronomy and sciences generally and to popularize astronomy.
The work of the association started immediately with two astrocamps organized in the summer of that year: one for young students, the other one for the older members. Still in 1996 two weekend events were held in the fall. The program mainly consisted of talks, presentations and some observation when weather permitted. Next year was also busy, four weekend events and two astrocamps were organized (for young and older members separately). The association underwent some changes in 1998 by changing the structure of programs and number of events to a day event per a month. In the beginning of that year a small piece of land was purchased in Sárrét (Blahová) with the intension of establishing a permanent observing site. Eventually we intend to build here the first observatory of the county! The summer again was spent successfully in two astrocamps and an important trip to vicinity of Balaton (lake in central Hungary) took place in order to find a nice and quiet spot from where we could observe the total eclipse of the Sun in august 1999. Meanwhile the professional observatory at Modra-Piesok (Comenius University in Bratislava) has been contacted by introducing our organization and offering any kind of cooperation. August of 1999 was a successful summer spent at Balaton observing and photographying one of the most beautiful phenomena of the sky - total eclipse of the Sun. Summer of 2000 saw, apart from the usual astrocamps, our effort of broadening our contacts and cooperations by visiting the observatory at Baja (southenr Hungary) where we spent a wonderful and fruitful weekend. Many astrocamps and regular meetings were made memorable and colorful by inviting our new friends - astronomers from the observatories mentioned. More trips to other organizations in Hungary were made, observations of the eclipse of the Moon and Sun and the Mercury transit were organized and the Corvus astrocamp in 2003 was held at Modra-Piesok, the location of the observatory of the Comenius University.
Apart from these regular and planned events many observations and occassional parties can be accounted for mostly of local characters. (Will be updated soon...)
